Mental Health Can Be Your Passport To Wellness
The state of your mental health is very crucial. The everyday pressures of dealing with perfection, work, possibly school, being a parent, and more in life can be exhausting at times. Sometimes, it’s hard to understand how so many of us tend to manage on a day to day basis without a nervous breakdown at some point. We all wear many hats in our lives and things aren’t always easy to deal with. However, so many individuals wake up put on a smile and get back to doing what they must to survive. Everyone, at least in some point in their life has experienced a mental trauma that has caused them anguish.
Whether it is dealing with loss or everyday stress no one is exempt from depression, anxiety, insecurities, and mental health struggles. It happens to everyone and society tends to shy away from the topic of mental health in general. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Taking the time to maintain your mental health is imperative to your overall wellness. According to the University Health Service of UMich these are some things you can do to stay mentally in tune.
Surround Yourself With Things That Make You Happy
These things can be good people or a simple photograph that takes you back to a happy memory. Having a strong support system of family and friends can help you make healthier decisions. While surrounding yourself with things that make you feel all warm and fuzzy has a positive effect on the state of your mental as well. Denmark is considered one of the happiest places in the world because many people practice the habit of Hygee.
Hygee which is pronounced “hoo-guh” is a danish term that is the consciousness of coziness. Do you have a warm, hand made blanket that your grandma made you when you we’re a kid? Or a special photograph that immediately brings you to a happy moment in time? These items cannot be bought because they have a sentimental value. Surrounding yourself with things that make you happy can make you happier overall. Which in turn helps your mental health.
You should always be your biggest cheerleader. It is important for your mental health that you value and love yourself. Avoid constantly putting yourself down and avoid self criticism. Celebrate your accomplishments no matter how big or small they are. Make time for yourself and do the things that you love.
How often have you taken the time out to release yourself from reality for a little bit just to unwind. Now there are a number of applications available on your smartphone devices that allow you to take a breath or two: literally ! Apps such as breath on iOS give you a reminder throughout the day to take a minute or two to relax and breath. Incorporate this with a little mediation to clear your mind and each day increase the time you do it.
Set Realistic Goals
Goals for many people are a measurement of success. If you want to excel in life professionally, physically, financially, and academically you have to set real goals for yourself. Write down these short and long term goals. As time progresses plan and execute them !
Take Care Of Your Body
Our bodies are like cars and without regular maintenance they won’t function properly. Take good care of your body. Stay away from things that can potentially harm your body such as drugs, and Tobacco. Exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy diet. Stay clear of abusing alcohol. Also, be sure to drink plenty of water and get a good nights rest. An extra added bonus of taking care of your body is that it helps you have better sex.
Always Get Help If You Need It
The most courageous thing that someone who is mentally suffering can do is to openly ask for help. Mental health issues many times go untreated because not too many people are open to discussing it. In the African American community this is the norm. Always seek help when you need it and never be afraid.
